Using Symlinks in Obsidian

In my notes I use symlinks to link to external files that reside in my Nextcloud. By using the link it doesn’t matter where the file is located as long as Obsidian can find it. And I can work with the file as if it were inside my Vault, like view a PDF inside Obsidian or watch a video.

But there’s a few caveats. Symlinks only work in Unix, not on your Phone or Windows. If you rename the file outside of Obsidian, the link won’t update and it will break. And if you try to follow the link on your mobile it will create an empty file instead.
